Her working career has spanned several environments:
She spent two years training executives and forensic investigators in the financial services sector on how to write business reports. This involved teaching the best practice in writing documents so as to clearly state what evidence has been gathered and build a logical progression of events so as to support the successful conviction of guilty parties. Important writing skills that she trained included: identifying the reader’s needs, choosing the right word, correct language usage, avoidance of jargon, proper email etiquette, correct punctuation, use of parallelism with bullets points, proper prepositions, accurate verb tenses, concord and optimal readability.
From her 20 years of experience as a VAT specialist in two of the “Big Four” South African auditing firms, Geraldine was exposed to many industries and corporate structures. She was required to draft and review opinions that were interpretations of the law. The nature of this task requires an extremely high level of accuracy and attention to detail in order to produce tight legal phrasing of a high literary standard. She was also one of the contributors to the original manuscript of the Deloitte and Touche VAT Handbook published by Butterworths in 1991.
She taught English and Mathematics at high schools for three years and spent five years giving private extra lessons. The teaching experience enhanced her ability to communicate verbally and understand where learning barriers occur with the understanding of English by second-language users.
She has the following qualifications:
- BA (English, Psychology, Statistics) (University of South Africa)
